NOLA AYOOLA
Nola Ayoola is a multidisciplinary artist whose works are her visual journal.
Through portraiture, woven and cut out abstract compositions her work
encapsulates the philosophy that ‘you cannot understand what you cannot pull
apart’. Ayoola’s practice emphasises the necessity of deconstructing complex
ideas, objects or concepts to grasp their essence fully. This makes her works
both theoretically and physically layered as a core voice. triggered by her
hyper- sensory processing sensitivity and synesthesia.
Ayoola’s methodology allows the examining and expression of emotions and
cultural elements, being of Yoruba heritage which is central to both her
identity and work, informing an invigorating lens and authenticity. She blends
environments, mythology, everyday life and personal experiences. Her hybrid
scapes reflect the complexity of our world. By often weaving elements
together, she crafts stories, delves into the concept of time that are almost
dreamlike yet universal and deeply rooted in the human experience - inviting
viewers to explore their own narratives through her tapestries.
Ayoola's works highlight shared narratives by nurturing recurring themes of
her interpretations of - displacement and migration, womanhood, social
constructs of gender, human interaction with communities and environments,
spirituality and Yoruba tradition.
